It’s a week before the biggest geekfest (still have trouble calling it pop culture, but I’m an old fart on that), but this may rank as a disappointing day in geekdom. Granted, it isn’t the worst, far from it, but I figure some astute marketing people figured Comic-Con geeks would be giddy about anything scifi coming so close to Comic-Con. Now, I’m sure they didn’t think the two geek things coming out today would be disappointments, no one would admit to that, but in my opinion I can’t understand why the TV show and movie coming out today are being revived.

Today the next, and hopefully last, in the Terminator franchise will come out. Arnold is back, as the tagline goes, so I guess that nostalgia is supposed to make people like me all giddy. It didn’t work for me with Jurassic World, but it did work for me with Mad Max, Fury Road. I’ve blocked out any reviews of this movie and I have seen the trailers. I liked the first and second Terminator movies but after those I got bored with the concept. I think I’m going to see it today at the lowest price possible but it isn’t a priority. It almost looks a like a parody movie. Let’s go back in time, again, and see if we can mess with the timeline, again and oh, by the way, let’s see if we can change the timeline so it makes sense to make no sense. Got it? I think the movie has a chance of making a good bit of coin, but I’ve seen more excitement over Magic Mike XXL. I think it’s highly possible Magic Mike XXL could do a great deal more at the box office that Terminator. When you think about it that would be an interesting feat. An R rated movie about male strippers catering to a mostly female audience does better than a PG-13 action movie with Arnold returning to one of his most iconic roles.

The other way back machine geek moment, even though way back was last year, is the second season of the CBS show Extant. I thought the miniseries was a such a mess last year, but it aired during the summer, with the competition being stale reality shows, so it got picked up for a second installment. This might be another binge watch penance show for me, like Empire was. Oh yes, I’m one of the few people in America it seems that didn’t go gaga over Empire, or Hustle and Flow Part 2 as I like to call it. I watched all of the episodes in one sitting and the show made my skin crawl. Extant wasn’t as bad, but like Empire there were moments where it seemed to advance the story, established elements had to be ignored or changed. If you have ten hours to tell a story, you should be able to build a rich environment to tell the story as well as give compelling characters and situations that don’t rely all the time for dumb luck to prevail.

It is possible both Terminator Genisys and Extant will turn out to be pleasant surprises, but I’m not holding my breath.
